Theatrical Performance

  • Second Foreign Language Performance

The Second Foreign Language Performance, also known as the “Graduation Performance,” is one of the most important annual events for students in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, with a tradition spanning nearly four decades since 1986. The program covers four language tracks—Japanese, Spanish, French, and German. Through this performance, each group takes full responsibility for scriptwriting, directing, and acting, bringing together everything they have learned over four years and showcasing it on stage. More than just a theatrical production, it is also a vibrant intercultural exchange, where both participants and audience members can experience the richness of multiple languages, as well as the unique styles and emotions that the performances convey.

  • English Drama Performance

Students looking for an opportunity to perform on stage join the Drama in Production class. The performances give everyone a chance to learn about acting, staging, lighting, costumes, makeup, and sound design. And it all happens in English. Grab your chance to be a star, at least for a few minutes. Performances in the past have included: The School for Scandal, The Love of Three Oranges, Stage Door, Alice in Wonderland, and The Libation Bearers.

Celebration Party

  • Shakespeare Birthday Celebration

As one of the most iconic figures in English literature, Shakespeare’s name has long been etched in the hearts of every student of FLLD. To celebrate the birth of this literary master on April 23, 1564, Professor Carolyn Scott began organizing a party in 2014. Since then, our department has proudly held the Shakespeare Birthday Celebration every April. The event features recitations and readings of Shakespeare’s classic plays and poems, allowing participants to experience the timeless charm of his works. Accompanied by fine refreshments and a hearty lunch, the celebration fosters a relaxing and joyful atmosphere. More than a tribute to Shakespeare’s literary achievements, it also serves as a meaningful moment for our students to gather, exchange ideas, and immerse themselves in the spirit of English literature.

  • Christmas Party

Christmas is one of the most significant and symbolic holidays in Western culture. To let students experience its warmth and festive spirit, our department, under the call of Professor Carolyn Scott, organizes a Christmas Party every December. This party has been held for over a decade, starting in December 2011, and has become a beloved tradition within the department. On the day of the celebration, “Santa Claus” makes a delightful appearance, leading everyone in singing familiar Christmas carols and handing out candies, which fills the atmosphere with a sense of fairy-tale joy. Towards the end of the event, a hearty lunch and exquisite desserts will be provided, offering a chance for students and faculty to share laughter and meaningful exchanges. More than just a festive gathering, the Christmas Party is a cherished occasion for the department to strengthen bonds and friendships, while together embracing the love, peace, and hope symbolized by Christmas.
