History

Our department is distinguished by a strong and diverse faculty team, with the majority holding professorial and associate professorial ranks. This composition reflects a wealth of academic expertise and teaching experience. At the same time, our young assistant professors bring fresh perspectives and innovative research energy. Together, this balanced structure ensures that the department combines tradition with innovation, providing students with both solid foundations and forward-looking insights. With careful planning of various committees and support from alumni, the Department has achieved rapid and balanced growth. Located in the Hsiu-chi Building on Kuang-Fu Campus, blending classical and modern architecture, the Department stands as a major academic hub equally devoted to literature, linguistics, and language education.

Year Development
1957 The Department was established.
1967 The evening program was introduced.
1993 The MA Program in Foreign Languages and Literatures was established, with a focus on fiction, drama, and cross-cultural studies.
1997 The evening program was reorganized into the Continuing Education Division (discontinued in 2004).
1999
  • MA Program for Working Professionals was established, focusing on linguistics, literature, and applied language studies, providing opportunities for in-service personnel to pursue further education (discontinued in 2010).
  • Ph.D. Program was introduced, building upon the academic foundation of the MA Program and dedicated to cultivating scholars in English and American language and literature research.
2003 The Department began admitting international students into undergraduate, MA, and Ph.D. programs.
2004 The MA Program was divided into two tracks: Literature and Linguistics.
2009 The Ph.D. Program was expanded to include Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching tracks.
